You can register using the Virginia Board of Elections citizen portal anytime at no charge.
In most elections, you have to register at least 11 days before Election Day, so the sooner the better.

August Primary
Political parties choose which candidates will represent them in the general election. Virginia has an open primary system, so you can choose to vote for candidates of the Republican party, or for those of the Democrat Party.
General Election
Voters choose members of Congress halfway through the President’s four-year term. Many states also have state elections this year (e.g. governor, state senate, etc.), but Virginia does not.
